Your safety and confidentiality
At COAP, we aim to keep the message boards confidential. There may be times when we are really worried about you and think that you are at risk or danger…Then we will talk to you about the need for somebody outside the COAP team to know what has happened or what is happening to you.
In order to let somebody outside the COAP team know we would use the details we have from your registered member account and pass those on to the social services or the police. In some cases the details we have from your account will not be enough and we would then need you to give us your contact details. Once we have these details we would have to pass those on to social services or the police. We would only do this if your life is at risk because of something you are doing or you are at risk from somebody else or you are a risk to somebody else.
Please note that if you would like to have counselling sessions with a COAP counsellor you will need to read the ‘Your safety’ page in the support section before you can contact a COAP counsellor. The safety and confidentiality is different in COAP counselling to the message boards. This is because you are entering into a private confidential space between you and the counsellor.
If you don’t agree with the confidentiality and safety guidelines then perhaps COAP is not for you and another service may be more appropriate like Childline, The National Association for Children of Alcoholics or Al Anon/Al Ateen. For information on other organisations visit our links page here.
