Our Story

Children of Addicted Parents and People (COAP) was founded by Emma Spiegler in 2006, to help establish connections between young people, mutually affected by parental and family drug and alcohol abuse, and other addictions such as gambling. Emma’s mother had an addiction to alcohol, and prescribed medication, for much of her childhood and teenage years. So, Emma wanted to provide other young people in similar situations with the help, and support, that she would have liked as a child.

Our welcoming, safe, and supportive online community continues to grow; letting young people know they are not alone in their experiences.

For many young people the current path may seem to be one of loneliness, despair, and confusion.  Through our message boards, we've come to learn just how resilient, determined, and hopeful young people can be when faced with, what seems like, such a hopeless situation.

Some of proudest moments of the last six years:
  • Winning the Anne Frank Award in 2008
  • Launching our free online counselling service in 2009
  • Forming our Trustee Board in 2010
  • Developing and running our mentor training programmes
  • Gaining charitable status in March 2011
  • Securing funding for our Founding Director and core costs.
  • Building our passionate and dedicated team of Trustees, Mentors, and Volunteers.
  • Leveraging the power of national media, we've broadcast our message to millions viaITV's Tonight, GMTV and Daybreak, and BBC News Breakfast, as well as national radio programmes such as Radio Five live phone in, and BBC Radio One Extra. We've also featured in national newspapers and magazines, including; The Observer, The Daily Mail, and Marie Claire.
  • Collaborating with '20 Stories High' to produce an animated video which features 2 poems written by members from our online community.
